In this paper, tried to consider Focus and Contrast Function of the ‘NP+是+XP’ Construction. The results are listed below.
First, the analysis of the ‘NP+是+XP’ Construction in this paper is different from the existing Structuralist approach. Existing studies have only discussed each Semantic Functions were analyzed separately. and I confirmed that there is no Common Theory that has been derived and established from a Pragmatics point of view so far.
Second, the ‘NP+是+XP’ Construction can focus on New information, which is a Proposition in the latter part, by making Old information a Topic and evoking information before ‘是’. At this time, the Korean Auxiliary Particle ‘은/는’ corresponds to ‘是’ indicates that the previous Component is a Topic.
Third, in the case of some Structures of ‘(NP)+是+N施事+VP’, the Argument about the Subject of the action is emphasized with the additional situation such as the action and result of the Agent after ‘是’ as the Focus Area. The corresponding Sentence types usually has a Focus Accent on the Argument immediately after ‘是’, and the Semantic Area of Focus formed an inclusive relationship including the Focus Accented Words.
And fourth, the ‘NP+是+XP’ Construction can simultaneously represent a boundary Focusing Function and an unboundary Contrasting Function. Some ‘NP+是+XP’ Construction have a Function of passive Exclusion, and in this case, they also express a Pragmatic Function of ‘Refuting the Speaker’s Opinion’.
