Nina Raine’s Tribes(2010) examines the relationship between Billy, a hard-of-hearing person, and his hearing family while shedding light on domestic discrimination, isolation, lack of listening and empathy, and tribalism. The play treats the family as a tribe and addresses the need for communication, understanding, and recognizing the differences and diversity among members. Billy uses spoken language and listens to and empathizes with his family when his self-indulgent and emotionally illiterate family employs verbal communication for aggression and mockery. Additionally, Billy’s family utilizes curative violence to normalize Billy while displaying ablebodyist attitudes and hostility toward social minorities. Tribes expands its critical focus by including the contradictions and limitations of identity politics observed in tribal communities. Raine highlights the differences and conflicts between Billy and Sylvia to reveal the heterogeneity and group pressure inside deaf communities. She emphasizes the need for continued conversations and empathy within all social minority groups.
