In Paradise Lost, Milton suggests that the postlapsarian paradise must be established so that life and coexistence based on the intrinsic value of each being can be achieved existentially and morally. Milton’s new paradise is not built outwardly in the way and place designated by certain political powers or dominant ideologies. Rather it justifies a providential and God-centered sanctuary defined as “paradise within,” which guides human judgment and choices to the right path. God’s presence in human minds results in the birth of a new humanity with radical subjectivity based on freedom through the restoration of the image of God. By acquiring a new subjective aspect, human beings can refine and sublime all creation into God, the origin of all beings. The new humanity in His image creates a kind of dialectical synthesis with God, with other human beings and with nature through their lifelong dedication to refinement and sublimation. By linking the outer world with a paradise within, humans become true rulers and priests who can save a world that has fallen into despair due to conflict and antagonism. The fulfillment of “paradise within” will gradually expand to the outer world like a concentric circle, transforming the external world into a paradise founded on the ethics of life and sustainable coexistence.
