The study aims to identify the problems and countermeasures of residential space experienced by apartment residents during the COVID-19 pandemic and to suggest a direction for planning residential space to respond to infectious diseases. To collect and analyze the user experience, we used the photo voice technique with seven apartment residents in the metropolitan area with children in elementary school. Through three stages of preliminary preparation, data collection, and data analysis, we collected various users’ experiences and derived critical insights by dividing them into sentences with semantic units. As a result, the living room, dining room, and kitchen were added with work and learning functions, resulting in problems in space utilization, such as noise and reduced concentration. While the master’s bedroom is difficult to use for purposes other than sleeping, the children’s bedroom requires separating areas according to functions or broader space. The balcony required a flexible structure and facilities to facilitate various activities such as camping, plant cultivation, and exercise. Securing a storage space for sanitary products, delivery services, garbage, and exercise equipment at the entrance was emphasized. Together, living rooms and bedrooms require flexibility to separate or expand areas according to their functions. Considering that the space utilization pattern varies depending on the child’s age, a flexible space plan should be presented according to the life cycle.
