This essay is an effort to first read the letters of Yeats and George to understand the automatic writing they have conducted and then to see how automatic writing could have affected Yeats’s poetry. One of the ways is to compare the poems before and after the automatic writing. The essay will examine how the poems before and after the automatic writing differ; even after the publication of A Vision in 1925. It is an important study because Yeats is sometimes regarded as a mage, and for that reason he is less highly thought of by some poets and critics. The making of A Vision must to me have enriched Yeats’s poetry, but had he not been a mage, he could still have written great poetry, as some early poems demonstrate. Ezra Pound must have liked his early poems when Pound was a college student, and came to England to meet him in person. Their encounter is to eventually change the direction of Modernist poetry in English. The essay is divided into two parts: the first will look into the process of the Yeatses’ automatic writing, and the second will compare the two kinds of poetry, one that is written after A Vision and the one before the publication of A Vision.
