Temperature control in cold-chain is critical in terms of the better quality control of products and enhanced customer satisfaction. While there is no formal requirement for a validation in food cold chain logistics, there is a rapid growth of awareness and need in temperature control in the field. As there is a discrepancy between the principle and the application, the field test is inevitable. This study identifies the application system and critical factors of TCLS (Temperature Controlled Logistics System) in food cold-chain logistics to provide the guidelines in practice. The IoT sensors and monitoring systems are installed in food logistics in Sungnam-city, South Korea followed by the ISPE (International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering) guidelines. In total, 17 sensors are installed in 6 areas considering the length of walls, the layout and number of racks, architecture air flow systems, entrance, and the center of the room. The result shows that the real-time continuous monitoring system can help the quality control in cold chain logistics. All the measurements can be found within the target point which is 5°C±1.2°C when the installed density is less than 170㎥. To enhance the temperature control in terms of accuracy improvement and reduce the tolerance range, the sensors need to be placed to avoid in places subject to sudden changes of temperature such as near the entrance or air flows. The results can be utilized for facility managers and logistics owners in cold-chain logistics to establish the guidelines in operation and define the optimal point in maintenance. Moreover, the optimal monitoring locations can be identified in building construction.
