Uncontrolled chronic inflammation, in most cases due to excessivecytokine signaling through their receptors, is known tocontribute to the development of tumorigenesis. Recently, ithas been reported that the antiviral membrane protein interferon-induced transmembrane protein 3 (IFITM3), induced byinterferon signaling as part of the inflammatory response afterviral infection, contributes to the development of B-cell malignancy.
The unexpected oncogenic signaling of IFITM3 uponmalignant B cell activation elucidated the mechanism by whichthe uncontrolled expression of inflammatory proteins contributesto leukemogenesis. In this review, the potential effects of inflammatorycytokines on upregulation of IFITM3 and its contributionto tumorigenesis are discussed.
