The IAEA and ICRP mentioned that the zircon and zirconia industries as major industrieswhere exposure occurred by Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM). In industries andprocesses handling zircons, there is possibility that radiation exposure is occurred by raw materials,byproducts, and final products which include NORM. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct doseassessment on workers in zircon industries. The purpose of this study is to conduct external doseassessment on workers in investment casting manufacturers among domestic zircon industries. Toachieve this purpose, an analysis of radiation exposure circumstances was conducted to identify handlingmaterials and working conditions in each manufacturer. Based on analysis of radiation exposurecircumstances, the exposure dose rate was measured in major processes where the radiation exposureof workers was expected as significant. Finally, the external dose assessment of workers in eachmanufacturer was conducted considering exposure dose rates and working times on major processes. The exposure dose rate in main processes of casting frame manufacturers A, B and facing materialmanufacturers C was measured to be 0.17 to 0.80 μSv h-1. In addition, the annual external doses ofworkers in each manufacturer were 0.05 to 0.29 mSv y-1. The external doses of workers were differentdue to handling materials, working types and working times. However, the annual external doses ofworkers in each manufacturer were less than the dose limit for public prescribed by the domesticNuclear Safety Act. It indicates that the effect of external radiation dose was insignificant. The resultsof this study will be used as a basis for figuring out the radiological characteristics of domestic zirconindustries and the external dose level of workers.
