초록· 키워드
Liberation and the Korean War had a significant impact on Korean medicine, especially in the field of research. There is a growing body of scholarship on the development of medical research in Korea between 1945 and the 1950s; however, this work is mainly focused on public health initiatives and the specific doctors and scientists who conducted this research. However, medical research consists not only of relevant knowledge and lead physicians but also of a network of physical infrastructures and support from various nonclinical professions. Technicians and sanitarians, for instance, are the backbone of the daily activities of laboratory work, and yet these subjects have seldom become the focus of historiography. This study examines the 406th Medical General Laboratory, the largest medical research facility of the United States military in Asia. It investigates how the research techniques and the technicians connected to this laboratory were developed and disseminated in Korea. This will shed light on how the technical side of the medical research tradition was formed in Korea, thus departing from a doctor-centered view of the growth of medicine in the country.
