This study examined the effect of the father’s parenting style on the children’s internalizing and externalizing problems, together with the mediating effect of the mother’s parenting stress. Using data on working parents with first-year elementary school children, the father’s parenting attitude was classified using a cluster analysis with SPSS 25.0, and then the study model was tested with multiple regressions using SPSS Process Macro. Finally, the mediating effect of the mother’s parenting stress was assessed through bootstrapping. The father’s parenting attitude was classified into democratic, neglectful, and acceptable types. Approximately 43.1% were democratic, 28.6% neglectful, and 28.3% the acceptable type. Regression analysis showed that the father’s neglectful parenting style significantly increased the children’s internalizing and externalizing problems while the mother’s parenting stress fully mediated this relationship. Based on these results, this study suggested practical and political solutions to prevent the development of problem behaviors among children by improving parenting skills and alleviating parenting stress.
