Objective: This study explores the self-management experience of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and creates personas. Background: T2D is one of the most common chronic diseases, and continuous self-management is important for preventing and controlling complications. Interventions through mobile health applications have been developed to support patients’ self-management. However, patient characteristics and needs vary. Thus creating personas representing patient characteristics could help develop an individualized self-management system. Method: Nine semi-structured interviews with T2D patients were conducted in Chungyang (a rural area in Korea) and Seoul. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using the software NVivo. Results: Three major themes regarding self-management behaviors have emerged from the inductive thematic analysis: 1) dietary habits, 2) exercise and physical activity, and 3) hospital visits. Patients" self-management experiences in each theme were explored using three personas that researchers created. Conclusion: Three personas were created, and their education level, presence of a caregiver or household type, and socioeconomic status were major factors for self-management behaviors. Application: Three personas created in this study could be used to guide a design of mHealth applications for T2DM patients.
