This paper examines the functions of Sementic function of factual conditional in Mandarin Chinese. The purpose of this study is to explain the discourse-pragmatic characteristics of factual conditional, which has not analyzed in the previous studies yet. This paper aims to investigate characteristics of the epistemic stance of chinese Ruguoshuo?hypotheticals. Following Sweetser(1990), I argue that most of the Chinese sentences which have been claimed to convey positive epistemic stance belong to either epistemic or speech-act conditionals cannot express realis meaning. With the focus on factual conditionals, which have been overlooked in the previous studies. This paper further explains this phenomenon from the perspectives of the subjectivity of the speaker and the epistemic state of the new information.
