This paper aims to reveal the meaning and category of (i)yamallo. The findings of this paper are as follows. First, the preceding expression of (i)yamallo indicates the syntagmatic focus(replacing focus) and the following expression of (i)yamallo indicates the background. Therefore, (i)yamallo can be referrred as the syntagmatic focus marker. Second, the focus of (i)yamallo can refer to both of the referential old information and new information, but the following expression of (i)yamallo which indicates the background refers to the old information. Third, as the focus of (i)yamallo has the exhaustiveness or exclusiveness, the alternatives of (i)yamallo do not have the value of the focus or have a lesser value than the focus. (I)yamallo means the weak exclusion and can also express the meaning of certainty or confidence. Fourth, it is general to appear in the order of ‘focus-background’ and expressions with a strong tone may follow (i)yamallo to reinforce the meaning of certainty or confidence. Fifth, the fact that (i)yamallo can not appear in the ‘-ki ha-’ construction is the strongest evidence that (i)yamallo is not a paradigmatic focus marker. The fact that a sentence with (i)yamallo can be used as a kes-un cleft also suggests that (i)yamallo indicates the syntagmatic focus.
