Family is an important venue where children can inherit prosocial values and behaviors from their parents. To trigger new research in Korean society and establish a knowledge foundation, this study empirically examines the prevalence pattern and characteristics of inter-generational co-incidence of prosocial behaviors. To do so, this study analyzes how parents and children engage in giving and volunteering activities within families, utilizing ‘Social Survey 2019’ by the Statistics Korea and the multinomial logistic regression method. The results show that first, inter-generational co-incidence of participation in giving and volunteering is low in Korean families. Second, ‘parental participation alone’ is 29.9% in giving and ‘inter-generational participation’ is 8.02%. In volunteering, ‘parental participation alone’ is 1.27% and ‘inter-generational participation’ is 13.75%. For the latter, ‘children’s participation alone’ is very high under the institutional influence regarding volunteering. Third, the results of multinomial logistic regression analysis on co-incidence behavioral patterns in giving show that the household head factor (religion, education level, socioeconomic status, and intention to charitable bequest), the household factor (household income), and the children factor (gender) have statistically significant effects. Fourth, the results of multinomial logistic regression analysis on co-incidence behavioral patterns in volunteering show that the household head factor (religion, socioeconomic status, and intention to charitable bequest), the household factor (household income and number of household), and the children factor (age: inverted U) have statistically significant effects. This study is meaningful as it contributes to building a new knowledge foundation regarding co-incidence patterns and predictors in prosocial behaviors within Korean families, which must be understood before the understanding mechanism of transmission of such values and behaviors within families. In addition, it has practical implications as it recognizes the necessity of new societal efforts to strengthen philanthropy practice in a place such as families that can be a key agent in the spread of sharing culture.
