In this article, author explains the important dry etching process in the eight major steps to semiconductor fabrication. In particular, the technology of atomic layer etching (ALE) has introduced as one of the most anticipated core technology in the fabrication of 3-dimensional next-generation semiconductor devices having a miniaturized and complex structure. Furthermore, the recent status of ALE process and equipment development are reviewed.
