The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influences of East and West on the developments of the Russian army and the efforts of the Russian state to integrate eastern and western military elements during the early modern period. For a long time the Muscovite state waged lasting wars withnomadic powers: Mongol-Tatars, Crimean-Tatars, and Ottoman Turks. In this process it adopted the political and social institutions, andespecially military technology from the East and South. But the Russianstate also had to struggle with European powers, the Teutonic Order,Poland-Lithuania and Sweden and for the victories actively adoptedEuropean cannons, firearms and infantry tactics from the West and North. Russia always borrowed militarily from its enemies. A series ofvictories of the Russian state in the wars of the early modern periodwere due to the success of integrating eastern and western militarytactics and technologies. Even after Peter the Great’s westernization,in the Russian military organization and tactics remained the easternmilitary elements. In conclusion, it is incorrect to say that the military power ofRussia in the early eighteenth century was dramatically achieved bythe westernization of Peter the Great. For a long time the Russianstate developed its own military tactics and technology in thegeopolitical environments between East and West.
