This project originates from a question of how Christianity could exercise its leverage both in larger societies and in Christians’ lives in the midst of an era in which late modernity and postmodernity coexist. The author is convinced that the lack of dialogue or deep understanding between theology and practice, between the academy and ministry, and between the church and the world has resulted in Christianity’s inability to respond to challenges and questions of secularization, religious pluralism, relativism, individualism, materialism, and postmodernism etc. In the midst of the English Enlightenment, when the ethos of pre-modernity and the ethos of modernity had coexisted, John Wesley pursued the key value of Christianity, “holiness and happiness,” with the help of his own theological methodology. He was neither swallowed up by secularized society and culture nor rejected them completely. Wesley’s theological methodology was the result of his efforts to respond properly to various issues of his own era in the midst of a changing period. Therefore, the author is convinced that Wesley’s case can give us a crucial clue in finding a solution to the problems of contemporary Christianity, faced with challenges of both late modernity and postmodernity. In this regard, this project deals with the goals, as well as the methodology, both of John Locke’s epistemology and of John Wesley’s theological reflections in the midst of the period of the Enlightenment. John Locke, a representative of the Enlightenment thinkers, took the lead in the formation of value systems and secular culture of his own era. This study surveys each thinker’s concept of the nature of happiness as the goal of their epistemological systems in lights of the perspective of eudemonism. In particular, the author calls readers’ attention to openness to dialogue within community, with other traditions in Christianity, and also with secular society in Wesley’s theological methodology.
