The purpose of this study is to see if the electrolyzed water can be used as the intermediate cleaner by examining the curl formative power and sustainability, hair thickness, hair density using MB staining, tensile strength and the surface of hairs by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). In this study, we used electrolyzed water as the intermediate cleaner and treated hairs with no. 2 agent after hairs were reduced by using no. 1 agent during the perm treatment on permed hairs. After hairs were heated at various temperatures such as 40oC, 47oC and 52oC, groups were treated with no. 2 agent and a variety of water as the intermediate cleaner as follows: control group (C1) using no intermediate cleaner, C2 using tap water, E1 using acidic electrolyzed water, E2 using basic electrolyzed water and E3 using acidic electrolyzed water after it was treated with basic electrolyzed water. Curl formative power and sustainability were better as hairs were heated at higher temperature in the following order: 52oC > 47oC > 40oC. Curl formative power and sustainability at 47oC and 52oC were higher in the following order of groups: E3 > E2 > E1 > C2 > C1. Hair thickness, tensile strength and hair density estimated by using methylene blue staining were higher in the following order: 40oC ≒ 47oC > 52oC. The order was opposite to that of curl formative power and sustainability. In addition, hair thickness at 47oC and 52oC was higher in the following order of groups: E3 > E2 > C1 > E1 > C2. Tensile strength and hair density estimated by using methylene blue staining were higher in the following order of groups: E3 > C1 > E1 > E2 > C2. According to observation using field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), cuticles of hair samples at 52℃ were more stable in the following order of groups: E3 > C1 > E1 > E2 > C2. Therefore, E3 showed the highest values in all measuring items. As E1 and E2 showed high curl formative power and sustainability, the electrolyzed water can be used as the intermediate cleaner. In particular, E3 seems to have very important results to be applied in the field.
