This study attempts to explore the volunteering behavior among Christians which is an interesting topic regarding the relation between religion and civic engagement. Particularly, this paper explores determinants of different areas of volunteering: religious only volunteering, secular only volunteering, both religious and secular volunteering, and non-volunteering. For the analysis, this study employs a multinomial logit model. The data are collected from 1,294 respondents from 38 churches in Seoul and Kyeong-gi province. To understand what factors affect volunteering participation and the pattern of volunteering behavior to choose the volunteering area, this study employs three theories: social resource theory(haman, economic, social and cultural capital variables), behavior setting theory(church size), group volunteer theory(denomination, sermon, and bulletin). The result of likelihood test shows that with the non-volunteer group as a reference, the importance of faith, church attendance and in-church network size has a positive effect on religious volunteering but church size has a negative effect. The secular volunteering is affected by the importance of faith, in-church and out-of-church network size and frequency of volunteering information on the church periodicals. Both religious and secular volunteering is positively affected by age, in-church network size, importance of faith, church attendance, Methodist denomination, and frequency of sermon but negatively affected by employment, children, and church size. This study guides a new empirical investigation of the factors affecting on participation in volunteering and the areas they involved in. It broadens and promotes understanding regarding such volunteers’ characteristics and behaviors whose religious organizations should continuously care for and cultivate. It also has practical implications in guiding the volunteer mobilization of religious organizations.
