Understanding of the History of Studies on a Spatial Structure between Galilee and Jerusalem in Mark’s Narrative and their Dynamic Relationship - Marcan Spatial Presentation and its Theological Significance - Sun Wook Kim (Westminster Graduate School of Theology) This study has the purpose of introducing the history of studies on Markan spatial presentation in terms of the relationship between Galilee and Jerusalem. For this, I will show diverse opinions on a spatial structure and a dynamic interaction between Galilee and Jerusalem. The incipient investigations used historical and redactional methodologies to focus on the conflict between Galilee and Jerusalem, assuming the historical reality of a distinct Galilean community: Galilean community and Jerusalem community were situated in rivalry and opposition. In addition, some argued that Galilee was an alternative to Jerusalem as a location for the expected Parousia or the eschatological realization of the kingdom of God. With the development of literary approaches, the relationship between Galilee and Jerusalem has been explored in terms of Mark’s presentation of narrative space. On the basis of structuralism, Mark’s narrative was analyzed in the frame of a mythic structure that generates two opposing poles (spaces). In a narratival dimension, one may examine Markan narrative space, which contains historical, social, symbolic, and cosmic characteristics. Sociological approach suggested lateral and vertical ethnicity models to interpret Mark’s narrative, in which Galilee and Jerusalem are the objects of restoration. In Jesus’ ministry, Galilee stands for a greater Israel in lateral ethnicity model and Jerusalem represents a renewal of Israel’s identity in vertical ethnicity model. Finally, there was a study on Markan spatial presentation centered on the person of Jesus. Jesus’ geographical movements and spatial practices provide a new spatial configuration focused not on the synagogue and the temple but on Jesus himself. It is not the places where power is concentrated (e.g., the synagogue and the temple), but the places ready to accept the new order and authority (e.g., the villages, the seaside, the wilderness, the mountain, and the way) where Jesus performs an alternative spatial practice by teaching, caring, healing, and revealing himself to the people of God. In this paper, I will survey all these understandings of Markan spatial presentation and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. I believe the space that Mark describes has historical, social, literary, symbolic, and ideological implications, and the understanding of Markan spatial presentation may help to disclose the theological purpose and significance in Mark’s narrative. The study of Markan spatial presentation, therefore, will serve as a fresh hermeneutical lens to interpret the Gospel of Mark.
