Traditional views of Taekwondo incorporate a mixture of different aspects that come in the way of the modern understanding of the Taekwondo spirit; it includes characteristics from a variety of different martial arts often used in combat, and practical and ethical standards of the country. The Taekwondo mind is only achievable after directly experiencing the martial art with the body. That is, the mental aspects of Taekwondo should be emphasized through vigorous training and acquisition of skills. By first understanding the purpose and value of sparring, forms, and breaking, it is then possible to convert what the body has learned to the mind and gain the confidence to accomplish goals. In order to train the body, a substantial amount of time is necessary, and constant repetition of the movements is crucial. The five mental factors that play into the training are categorized into perseverance through repetition, challenging of skills, mastery of skills, confidence, and respect. Through this process, the Taekwondo martial artist will be able to internally feel and naturally control the body’s flow of energy. Once the mind and body are able to act in unison the martial artist can claim complete mastery of Taekwondo, allowing the martial artist to smoothly execute techniques and easily see and utilize any opponent’s weaknesses. The Taekwondo spirit and philosophy is inexplicable in words; taekwondo is an art that must be experienced and learned with the body. Only through physical training can the martial artist truly understand it. It is my hope that the foundation for understanding the theoretical aspects of modern Taekwondo can be based in physical training and its practical applications.
