The purpose of this article is to reflect on the consumption and politics of commemorating war today where the post-war generations, who have not experienced war themselves, are growing in number and to consider the historical imagination caused by contemporary art exhibitions at war memorials. How will we show war to the “post-memory” generation who pray for, empathize with and attempt the healing of wounds while pushing for peaceful coexistence? What does a war exhibition look like that opens the possibility to cease maximization of the spectacle and tragedy of war and creation of heroes for national consumption, and instead attempts to interpret history truthfully? To seek an answer to these questions, I will introduce in this article the Imperial War Museums in the UK, which are revising the conventional war exhibition culture to include displays of contemporary art.
