Focusing on one of the first Soviet science fiction films, Aelita, this article examines the innovations and limitations of Soviet fashion design as it grew out of an interest in the task of constructing the everyday and the political economy of things that preoccupied Soviet artists after the October Revolution. Beginning with an overview of the evolution of the works of those who rejected "art for art"s sake" and turned to productivist art, the article examines the innovations in fashion design as the creation of everyday life as an artistic object, specifically the "Constructivist Body," and the problems of translating such avant-garde aesthetic orientations into the concrete practice of socialist nation-building through the lens of Yakov Protazanov"s science fiction film Aelita. In particular, the development of Alexandra Exter"s constructivist design experiments in creating everyday life in Mars, a key space that drives the events of the film, will be examined, followed by an analysis of scenes in which Aelita"s Martian landscape is simultaneously revealed and contrasted with the costumes of the NEF era on Earth in the Soviet everyday life.
