Kanheri is one of the important rock-cut Buddhist monastic settlements located within the boundaries of the metropolitan city of Mumbai. The site of Kanheri is surrounded by a forest, known as the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, giving us glimpses of the ancient natural landscape in which the monastery flourished. This landscape has been perceived in different ways over time. The changing perception of mankind of the sacred geography associated with Kanheri is reflected in the tangible and intangible culture associated with the site. Though the tangible remains remained in the form of archaeological evidence, intangible traditions need to be reconstructed from the scanty data available to us. The paper intends to discuss the use of space at the site of Kanheri as reflected in the archaeological and literary evidence. An attempt to shed light on the evolving sacred geography associated with Kanheri is made in this paper.
