The purpose of this paper is to classify the polysemous verb ‘da(打)’ in Modern Chinese into its prototype meaning and extended meaning according to the prototype theory, and analyze the process of meaning extension by using the image schema of cognitive linguistics. This study shows the embodied image schema serves as the foundation for the semantic structure and the image schema transformation motivates semantic extension.
This study finds that the verb ‘da(打)’ listed in the Modern Chinese dictionary has 24 meaning items, among which the prototype meaning is ‘hit’ and its 23 extended meanings form radial categories with the prototype as the reference point. They can be classified into 11 categories: hit, damage, attack, produce, change, direction, movement, acquisition, removal, bodily movement and manner. In addition, as structural elements that activate the image schema of the prototype meaning ‘force schema’, there are six main components source of force, target of force, path of force, tool of force, intensity of force, and result of force. It is found that the transitivity decreased and non-prototypicality increased, as the transformation elements or the degree of transformation increased.
It has been clarified that the image schema of the verb ‘da(打)’ and its transformations serve as motivating mechanisms for semantic extension through this study. This analysis also contributes to the understanding the polysemy of the Modern Chinese verb ‘da(打)’ and uncovering the dynamic linguistic phenomenon of infinite semantic expansion.
