The purpose of this study is to analyze the expressive features and the aesthetic characteristics of fashion design using food motifs. A total of 645 fashion collection works published from S/S in 2000 to F/W season in 2023 were selected and analyzed. Additionally, theoretical studies referring to related professional books, papers, and websites focusing on food and food fashion keywords. The expressive features of fashion design using food motifs were as follows. First, pop art expressions through digital printing showed popularity and humor with expanded, parodied, or vivid colors of food images. Second, the modular expression achieved assemblage-based material expression, which consisted of food containers or ingredients repeated as a unit. Third, texture expression through similar textures stimulated various senses by using actual ingredients as costume materials or realistically reproducing various textures of food. Fourth, the utilization of oversized accessories and the presentation of surreal clothing silhouettes exemplified the avant-garde fashion sensibility reflected in the exaggerated scale. The aesthetic characteristics of fashion design using food motifs were derived as follows: (1) Delivery of playful kitsch emotions, (2) Sensory expression of sexual symbolism, (3) Reflection of the identity of food culture, and (4) Practice of sustainable fashion.
