Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze whether people feel luxurious when they feel like real wood in the interior materials of wood images. In addition, it is to compare whether the emotional satisfaction for a sense of reality and an impression of luxuriousness is different according to region or race.

Background: As customer needs for automobile properties as a living space increase, interest in vehicle design considering the user"s emotions is increasing. To develop interior materials that replace real wood, this study aims to find out about the material conditions in which users feel a sense of visual reality and an impression of luxuriousness.

Method: Interior material samples of wood images were produced to investigate subjective emotional satisfaction for a sense of reality and impression of luxuriousness. By changing the embossing depth and pattern generation rate, which are used as design factors for interior material manufacturing, 9 types of samples were produced and used for emotional evaluation. To compare the emotional satisfaction of Koreans and Germans, this experiment was conducted with 46 Koreans and 80 Germans.

Results: In the case of Koreans, the deeper the depth of the pattern and the lighter the pattern image, the more they felt like real wood, but they did not feel the most luxurious for the sample under conditions that looked like real wood. However, in the case of Germans, only the darkness of the wood patterns affected the sense of reality, and the conditions for feeling a sense of reality and the conditions for feeling luxurious were similar.

Conclusion: The interior materials that look like real wood did not feel luxurious, and it was found that the emotional satisfaction conditions felt by Koreans and Germans were different for vehicle interior materials. To increase the level of emotional satisfaction with luxuriousness, it is necessary to additionally explore the degree of darkness and lightness of interior material patterns.

Application: It is expected that the design of automobile interior materials with a luxurious wood image will not only increase the emotional satisfaction of automobiles but also be applicable to interior design in the field of architecture.
