Color is considered as a powerful and effective design element in affecting people’s emotions. Therefore not only in brands but also in interior designs, colors are used to convey their ideal identities or certain images. However, through the period of modernism, color has been in a way understated. Moreover, many designers consider selecting colors to be more of an intuitive process and therefore find it difficult in organizing a certain color palette for a specific spatial design. Thus aims of this paper is to introduce a design method of extracting color palettes from paintings that can be applied to a boutique hotel with spatial color marketing. The process is as follows. First is selecting the right color-extracting program. Therefore thorough analyses of various programs were carried out, and by using MCE(Moon Color Extracting) program. The second step is a selection of paintings and David Hockney’s paintings were considered appropriate for the subject. In the third step, by using the MCE Program 9 colors and proportions used of each color of 5 paintings were extracted. Lastly, a boutique hotel was designed applying the 5 different color palettes of David Hockney’s paintings. Through this study, researchers found that extracting color from paintings may serve as a significant marketing tool for boutique hotels. Also, there are many color- extracting programs available all with pros and cons but when extracting colors closest to there original color codes and color ratios MCE program was considered as best. Even though the specification of each color may not be 100% the same as the original painting itself, this experiment does show that by using such a program, it is possible to transfer color identities of a painting to an interior space that can be used as a useful design tool.
