Modern people pursue free life and place importance on stimulation of new experiences in a diversified environment. As modern social trends change and develop, there are more opportunities for us to experience new stimuli, and the number of people visiting new spaces for differentiated experiences is increasing. As was the case in the past, modern space is also changing its usage patterns and design patterns according to the needs of the times. The researcher noted the boundaries of space as a key element of the change. Boundary ranges become ambiguous as users’ perception of space expands, and spatial boundaries are no longer simply considered to play an important role in the user’s experience, rather than a physical space division. Therefore, we would like to understand the phenomenon of ambiguous boundaries of space and interpret the spatial experience that appears at ambiguous boundaries. As a research method, I would like to understand the flow of social phenomena that influenced the expansion of modern people’s perception and describe the flow of modern space accordingly. Second, I would like to examine the concept of boundaries and their historical meaning and analyze the ambiguity of boundaries. Since then, each spatial characteristic element is derived based on M. Merleau-Ponty’s chiasme and J. Derrida’s parergon theory, which conducted research on human perception and ambiguity. Third, based on M. Merleau-Ponty’s chiasme and J. Derrida’s parergon, the characteristic elements of each space are interacted to derive characteristic elements of ambiguous boundary spaces. Fourth, I would like to present the meaning and method of this study through the research and describe the value and direction of ambiguity of boundaries accordingly. Modern social phenomena such as the digital revolution, diversification, and the era of emotion have affected the expansion of the realm of perception that experiences and senses modern human space. In addition, modern space is trying to make various changes by emphasizing the ambiguity of user experiences, emotions, and boundaries. The user’s extended area of perception obscured the range of boundaries experienced in space, forming a complex meaning of boundaries. In order to understand the concepts of user experience, perception, and ambiguity, the spatial characteristics of the two theories were derived by examining the chiasme and parergon theory, and as a result of linking them, three characteristics of ambiguous boundary spaces such as infinity, non-formality, and expandability were derived. As a result of case analysis limited to domestic space along with ambiguous boundary characteristics, it was confirmed that ambiguous boundary characteristics were sufficient to provide users with special experiences and awareness of new stimuli. Finally, it is expected that the characteristics of ambiguous boundary spaces will continue to develop and be understood and used as an effective way to provide users with interesting spatial experiences and change their perception of new boundary spaces.
