Because of cultural proximity, Korean dramas have been rapidly accepted by Taiwanese people since 2000, and driving the development of the Korean Wave. Although the degree of Korean Wave in Taiwan has been increasing day by day over the past 20 years, the level of anti-Korean sentiment is not inferior to that of Hallyu mania. Watching Korean dramas has become a daily routine for Taiwanese people. In Taiwan, Cable and Wireless TV Station broadcasts Korean dramas 24 hours a day. In addition, with the popularity of OTT, watching Korean dramas or movies has become easy. Korean wave contents derived from movies and dramas such as cosmetics, fashion, food, etc., as well as travel, Korean language learning, etc. , are all very popular in Taiwan. However, the Hallyu mania has not led to a decrease in anti-Korean sentiment. According to a survey conducted by KOFICE(2020-2023), Taiwan’s level of anti-Korean sentiment is the second highest among nine Asian countries with the most disapproval of it being a ‘friendly country’. Anti-Korean sentiment and anti-Korean Wave need to be discussed separately. The main reasons for Taiwan’s anti-Korean sentiment are ‘disputes at sports events’, ‘economic competition’, ‘disrespect for Taiwan’, and ‘unilateral exchanges. On the other hand, the main reasons for anti-Korean Wave are ‘extreme commercialization’, ‘influence on Taiwan’s content industry’, ‘negative impact of Korean dramas’, etc. Anti-Korean sentiment has an effect on acceptance of Korean wave contents. Until the factors of anti-Korean sentiment are eliminated, the degree of Hallyu mania cannot spread. This article proves from the survey that the degree and causes of Taiwan’s Hallyu mania and anti-Korean sentiments have not changed over the past 20 years. Therefore, this article suggests that Korean Wave should transcend economic Hallyu and go into the ‘cooperation Hallyu’ that can promote exchanges and cooperation between the both sides.
