Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the potential to revolutioniz, but its potential and limitations in architectural design domain are still unclear. This study investigates the potential and limitations of AI-based architectural design by comparing the perceptions of students and professionals. The findings include that AI-based architectural design is promising in terms of realism, but it still has limitations in terms of creativity and novelty. Architecture students who participated in the survey were more likely to rate AI-based architectural design favorably than professionals, suggesting that professionals have a more realistic understanding of the limitations of AI-based architectural design. This outcome suggests that future research on AI-based architectural design should focus on improving creativity and novelty. This work could be done by developing new AI algorithms that are better at generating creative and novel designs, or by providing AI-based architectural design tools that are more accessible to designers.
