    This paper presents a new meta-heuristic optimization algorithm called the Insect Antennae Algorithm (IAA), which is inspired by the searching mechanism of insects using their antennae. The inspiration and implementation of the proposed IAA are described, and the parameters used in the IAA are analyzed in detail. The robustness and efficiency of the IAA are validated using nine well-known benchmark functions and four constrained functions. Standard engineering design problems, such as tension/compression spring design, welded beam design, pressure vessel design, and speed reducer design, are addressed to verify the applicability of the IAA in the field of engineering. The numerical results clearly demonstrate that the IAA outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of convergence and searching ability to find the global optimum solution. The various test results make it clear that the IAA can be widely applied to scattered optimization problems in various fields, as well as complex engineering design problems that exist in the real world.
