The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of narcissism, self-management, and confidence on exercise addiction in college athletes. For this study, a survey was conducted on 406 athletes from universities in the metropolitan area using the narcissism scale, self-management scale, confidence scale, and exercise addiction scale, and the researcher analyzed the collected data. The results of the study are as follows:
First, as a result of analyzing the effect of narcissism on exercise addiction, it was found that self-display, a sub-factor of narcissism, had a positive relation to withdrawal symptoms, desire to exercise, and emotional attachment, which were sub-factors of exercise addiction. Second, as a result of analyzing the impact of self-management on exercise addiction, it was found that life management, a sub-factor of self-management, had a positive effect on withdrawal symptoms, a sub-factor of exercise addiction. Furthermore, mental management, a sub-factor of self-management, was found to positively affect exercise desire and emotional attachment, which are sub-factors of exercise addiction. Third, as a result of analyzing the effect of confidence on exercise addiction, social support, a sub-factor of confidence, was found to have a significant influence on withdrawal symptoms, a sub-factor of exercise addiction.
Considering the above conclusions, the research addressed that college athletes’ narcissism, self-management, and confidence have a significant impact on exercise addiction. In the future, further study is necessary to select various subjects and conduct in-depth research on each variable in a controlled environment.
