    The double rotor PM synchronous motor(DR-PMSM) has been studied to reduce the mechanical losses and maintenance of the mechanical speed reducers in a railway vehicle driving system. DR-PMSM consists of a non-contact magnetic gear with two rotors, PM rings, and three phase stator windings. The torque of DR-PMSM depends on the load angle between inner and outer rotors as well as the field flux and stator currents. The high-speed operating ranges of DR-PMSM can be extended by flux weakening control, such as the conventional three-phase PM synchronous motor. The available dq currents in the flux weakening mode are restricted by the current limit circle and the voltage limit ellipse. The center of the voltage limit ellipse for DR-PMSM is not fixed but shifts depending on the load angle, whereas that for the conventional single rotor PMSM is fixed. This study analyzes the operating point of dq currents for the given speeds and load torque under flux weakening mode of DR-PMSM. Additionally, the operating characteristics of flux weakening control are verified through Matlab/Simulink simulation and 1kW DR-PMSM experiment.
