A Brief History of Foreign Fine Arts, which this paper tries to analyze, is a textbook widely used in Chinese universities due to the regulations of the Ministry of State Education of China. The paper is aimed at how to understand foreign art history intensively and extensively. The nature of the Chinese education system does not allow teachers to choose textbooks by themselves based on their needs and numbers, so it is necessary to discuss a specific textbook in various ways. The paper would reference other scholars’ texts both directly and indirectly, or comparatively analyze, while focusing on analyzing the above textbook and discussing “general” issues that require attention in art history research. It focuses on the following three aspects: 1) research framework, 2) research method, and 3) research scope. These three are reciprocal and affect each other in a complex way, expanding the depth and breadth of art historical research. For the convenience of discussion, this paper briefly mentions how history/art history is structured and arranged in the dialogue between the present and the past, then examines the basic composition and arrangement of the textbook, A Brief History of Foreign Fine Arts. In the specific case analysis, the problems raised in general Western art history research are reviewed first, and then concentrate on the specific contents that the textbook needs to overcome, while accepting the discussions that have already been developed. The tentative conclusions of this paper is how to overcome European-centric technology, diversify research methods, and do setting and distributing of the research scope of modern art. It basically matches the issues of research framework, method and scope. Lastly, although this paper is an analysis of a textbook commonly used in art universities in China, it is hoped to provide a reference for related art history research in Korea.
