This study investigates the distinction between gestures and signs within Korean Sign Language (KSL), with a specific emphasis on personal pronouns and their grammaticalization. Key inquiries addressed include the relationship between handshapes in KSL pronouns and those in Korean spoken language gestures, the correlation between KSL pronouns and grammatical markers, and the variability observed in KSL first-person pronouns. The research juxtaposes two theoretical frameworks: the formal linguistic perspective, which posits gestures and signs as discrete entities, and the cognitive psychology viewpoint, which conceptualizes a continuum from gestures to signs. Evidence corroborating the formal linguistic stance includes handshape consistency across different signers, distinctiveness from gestural movements, stability in form, and integration into broader linguistic structures. Conversely, evidence favoring the cognitive psychology perspective highlights the gradual transformation of previously gestural elements into fixed signs and the coexistence of diverse forms representing various stages of linguistic development. This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of KSL"s distinctive attributes and offers valuable insights into broader linguistic phenomena, enriching our comprehension of the evolutionary and functional dynamics of sign languages as structured communication systems.
