Purpose: The purpose of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of South Korea’s virtual augmented reality-based physical activity program using a meta-analysis.
Method: In this study, analysis papers were selected through a systematic literature review, and a metaanalysis was conducted on the 26 selected papers.
Results: First, it was found that virtual reality (VR)-based physical activity programs had different effects depending on the disease. The healthy group showed a large effect size, while the sick group showed a medium effect size. Second, the effect size of the VR-based physical activity program was large in adults and the elderly, and a medium in children, depending on the age group. Third, VR technology was confirmed to have a large effect on mental health. Fourth, it was confirmed that the effect size was substantial depending on the VR environment in the group using Kinect, Oculus, and PlayStation.
Conclusion: This study shows that VR technology-based physical activity programs can significantly enhance health promotion and rehabilitation. Moreover, as a fundamental technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, VR-based physical activity programs offer a crucial foundation for fostering ongoing progress and creativity in the realm of physical education.
