This study examines the Korean War in the “The Graybeards” journal, published by American veterans, and how the Gangwon region was recognized through battles in Gangwon Province at the time. The battlefields were known as “The Ridge of the Leader,” “Blood Ridge,” and “Punchball,” and there were fierce battles between Pia. In modern Korean history, the periphery, closeness, and isolation of Gangwon-do are closely related to the division of the two Koreas. Cheorwon-gun and Goseong-gun, which weredivided into two bythe Korean division, and Hwacheon-gun and Yanggu-gun, facing the North, have symbolic meanings as blocked areasthat can no longer move forward. The Cheorwon Civilian Control Line, which is installed in an area 10-12 kilometers from the southern limit of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), demonstrates the isolation of Gangwon Province. Northern Gyeonggi Province and northern Gangwon Province, which have been marginalized and “mainly changed,” are certain to emerge as hubs of inter-Korean exchanges through economic cooperation. Most of the large waterways of inter-Korean reconciliation and economic cooperation have been forced to go through Gangwon-do, which has been considered the most underdeveloped and isolated area. Central Gangwon-do, which used to be a symbol of the surrounding area, is now becoming a central symbol for a peaceful Korea; thus, a closed space is becoming an open space.
