This study aims to determine whether the artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm used by Naver and Daum Kakao (the most visited online portals in Korea) plays an unbiased role and further suggests ways forward by identifying aspects of news editing with the use of AI for PC and mobile devices. To this end, and to determine what society news is consumed most, data were collected between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (the main news search interval of the day). The data were then used to analyze trends in the most popular media and media companies. Research findings show that the presence of conservative media companies was high in terms of society news accessed via Naver and Daum Kakao; progressive media companies were found to play a less significant role. In addition, Daum Kakao had a higher proportion of news from the three major news agencies. Through open and transparent social consensus, it is necessary for online portal news aggregators to secure policies regarding to the transparency of the principles of their AI algorithms, commit to high-quality news reporting, and value neutrality.
