Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the dimensions of commercially available filtering facepiece masks and compare them with the corresponding sizes of Korean standard headforms to identify the allowances and design characteristics of masks across various parts.
Background: Filtering facepiece masks need to be marked with the KF grade along with various face dimensions for size selection. However, current filtering facepiece masks, only suggest vertical length, making it difficult for wearers to select a wellfitted mask corresponding to their face shape.
Method: We examined a total of 18 masks sourced from six different companies, each offering three sizes (small, medium, and large), including two-fold and threefold types. Twelve head dimensions (5 vertical lengths, 3 horizontal lengths, 1 height, and 3 widths) pertinent to mask design were selected. The allowances and design characteristics of masks were analyzed by comparing the standard head medium size with large size masks and the standard head small size with medium size masks.
Results: The mask allowance analysis showed that two-fold masks had more allowances than three-fold masks in most dimensions. Significant allowances, especially, were observed in face length, sellion to tragion length, menton to tragion length, nose height, tragion to stomion length, face breadth, bitragion width, and bigonial breadth. Among the two-fold masks, VM02 displayed a notable allowance in the vertical length from the root of the nose to chin tip, while among the three-fold masks, HM01 exhibited a substantial allowance in the same dimension.
Conclusion: The present study identified that the two-fold masks offer greater allowances in various dimensions compared to the three-fold masks. Further research is needed to establish specific ranges of appropriate allowances, emphasizing the importance of balancing comfort and leakage prevention for effective mask design.
