Objective: The aims of this study are to measure perceived discomfort depending on shoulder flexion, repetition, and external load though an experiment, and to investigate the validity of whole-body observational methods such as RULA and LEBA for assessing shoulder musculoskeletal loadings, based on discomfort.
Background: The lower back was the most frequently affected by WMSDs from 2019 to 2021 in Korea, but excluding acute or accidental lower back pain, the shoulder was the most vulnerable to WMSDs. For preventing shoulder WMSDs, accurate quantification of exposure to risk factors associated with the shoulder is needed.
Method: An experiment measuring discomfort was conducted, where three independent variables including shoulder flexion, repetition, and external load were adopted and 16 college students participated. Two representative observational methods of RULA and LEBA was compared based on discomfort, and risk levels.
Results: Discomfort and LEBA score were significantly affected by the three independent variables, whereas RULA grand score was affected by an independent variable of shoulder flexion. LEBA score was more linearly correlated with discomfort than RULA grand score. LEBA more highly assessed postural loads for 27 experimental treatments compared to RULA.
Conclusion: LEBA may be better in evaluating shoulder musculoskeletal loadings than RULA.
