This study investigates how serial entrepreneurs` past experiences of success or failure shape their strategic preferences for differentiation or cost leadership strategies. To do so, we apply prospect theory in a new entrepreneurship context, aiming to understand the dynamic nature of entrepreneurs` risk preferences and strategic orientation. Our data, collected from the 2019 Venture Business Accuracy Survey provided by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups of the Republic of Korea, allows us to examine serial entrepreneurs" strategic preferences and behavior in a relatively stable and ‘normal’ business environment, controlling for the external shock effects of COVID-19. We employ logistic regression analysis to identify odds ratios and marginal effects. The results indicate that serial entrepreneurs with experience of failure are more likely to adopt a differentiation strategy, in line with prospect theory`s predictions. Conversely, entrepreneurs with past success experience show risk-averse behavior and consistent cost leadership strategies. These findings underscore the influence of past entrepreneurial experience on the strategic decisions of serial entrepreneurs. Our study`s originality lies in the unique application of prospect theory to the field of serial entrepreneurship, which has primarily been explored through lenses such as opportunity recognition and resource-based perspectives. By examining the impact of previous entrepreneurial experience on subsequent strategic decisions, we contribute to a broader comprehensive understanding of entrepreneurial behavior and strategy formulation, especially in non-Western settings.
