This thesis is a translation of a part of Wu Xiaolin's 中國散文美學 (里仁書局印行, 民國84) discussing the aesthetics of Chinese prose. In 中國散文美學, Wu Xiaolin explained the problems related to the aesthetics of Chinese prose, and before exploring the rules that Chinese prose aesthetics developed, what is prose and how to look at ancient Chinese prose, and the study of ancient Chinese prose aesthetics. First of all, I expressed my own views on issues such as the subject and scope of research and the classification of the period of aesthetic change in ancient Chinese prose. The translator translated Chapter 6 of this book, “Writing must be natural.(必得於自然).” Wu Xiaolin argued that Ou Yangxiu advocated the plain and natural beauty of prose writing. In this paper, Ou Yangxiu's prose aesthetics are divided into 1) introduction, 2) argument for the combination of literature and Tao, 3) pursuit of prose art that reflects real society, 4) emphasis on novelty, simplicity, and spirit, 5) the pursuit of a plain and natural style.
