Hayao Miyazaki’s film Princess Mononoke (1997) and James Cameron’s film Avatar (2009) explore similar themes of mining, information, religion, and technology, despite their different backgrounds and cultural contexts. In particular, the theme of mining is central to both Princess Mononoke and Avatar, evoking contemporary data mining and information mining, and metaphorically representing the conflict between human exploitation of natural resources and industrialization and the environment. However, the way mining is portrayed in each film differs in context, symbolism, and narrative consequences. This paper therefore aims to compare and analyze the metaphorical roles of mining by Lady Ebishi in Princess Mononoke and data mining by Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar. First, it analyzes the iron smelting process in the Tatara Village in Princess Mononoke as a metaphor for the research process that led to the development of the atomic bomb through the discovery of nuclear fission. This is because both processes involve the transformation of natural resources into powerful and destructive technologies, and both raise profound ethical questions about the consequences of human innovation and the responsibilities that come with exercising such power. Next, it suggests that data mining in Avatar serves as a powerful metaphor for the broader theme of exploitation and control that is also evident in the film’s depiction of interstellar mining. Both forms of ‘mining’—whether of information or physical resources- can be seen as a metaphor for current and future space mining endeavors through data mining. This paper suggests how metaphorical roles in films such as Princess Mononoke and Avatar can serve as useful frames for both technical ambitions and ethical concerns.
