Digital restoration has become a valuable alternative for reconstructing ancient architectural sites that are challenging to restore physically due to the absence of relics or records. This study examines the digital restoration of Mireuksa Temple's central gate in Iksan, using augmented reality (AR) technology to visualize ancient structures that no longer exist and make them accessible through mobile devices. Domestic and international AR restorations at archaeological sites were reviewed, and categorized into stationary telescope displays, mobile device use, and head-mounted displays (HMDs). Key challenges in applying AR to archaeological sites include improving content quality, enhancing visitor convenience, and ensuring safety. To address these issues for Mireuksa Temple, digital restoration was implemented on mobile devices, such as tablets and smart glasses. A survey on the AR content’s effectiveness showed high satisfaction levels: around 90% satisfaction with the content, 88% with device usability, and 87% with intent to recommend. Respondents also requested more diverse content offerings. To maximize digital restoration’s impact on archaeological sites, several strategies are recommended. First, concise and accessible content should be created by distilling unique site information and ensuring data sufficiency. Limiting explanation duration helps maintain visitor engagement, while partnerships with nearby museums or online platforms can provide additional context. Given the rapid evolution of digital technology, continuous content updates and maintenance are essential. Further research into diverse digital restoration methods for ancient sites is also encouraged.
