Purpose: Evidence of the effectiveness of critical care rehabilitation is accumulating, and the role of nurses is essential for critical care rehabilitation to operate effectively. This study aimed to comprehensively explore the perceptions of critical care rehabilitation nursing from the perspective of critical care nurses. Method: This qualitative study conducted individual in-depth interviews with 13 critical care nurses who were engaged in critical care rehabilitation. Data were collected from April to December 2022. A content analysis was conducted to identify themes within the interview transcripts. Results: Four categories were identified form exploring critical care nurses’ perceptions of critical care rehabilitation nursing: “Perceptions of critical care rehabilitation,” “Perceptions of critical care rehabilitation nursing,” “Barriers to critical care rehabilitation nursing,” and “Suggestions for establishing critical care rehabilitation nursing.” Conclusion: To revitalize critical care rehabilitation, it is urgent to address the challenges of critical care nurses. First and foremost, the critical care rehabilitation workforce must be expanded. Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses need to be included in the multidisciplinary team and be involved in decision-making, and multidisciplinary teams need to collaborate based on organic communication. Additionally, establishing critical care rehabilitation training programs and expanding educational opportunities should promote successful critical care rehabilitation.
