This essay endeavors to trace the spiritual evolution of the main characters in The Brothers Karamazov, which portrays the pivotal moment in human history when the Christian spirituality and the Enlightenment reason clashed against each other. Dostoevsky mainly as a Christian believer argues that the ethics of human society falls short of removing the evils deep-seated in human psyche, yet the spirituality only by resorting to divinity incarnated as Jesus can reawaken the good dormant in it. The spiritual evolution narrated fictionally by Dostoevsky parallels the spiritual leap rendered philosophically by Kierkegaard as a dialectical journey to achieve an existential selfhood. Thus, II) at the stage of reason alias Thesis, Ivan’s evolution as votary of the Enlightenment reason will be depicted; III) at the stage of passion alias Antithesis, Dmitri’s evolution from carnal passion to spiritual sacrifice and love; finally, IV) the Christian love and forgiveness shared by the elder Zosima and Alosha at the stage of spirituality alias Synthesis.
Dostoevsky is a preacher of human freedom; his ultimate goal is not pleasure or happiness. The main characters in this novel pursue the freedom of the self in their own way. The novelist demonstrates nature is a product of necessity and the reason in natural science may provide pleasure, security and happiness for humanities, yet freedom cannot be secured as a gift for them. The sole way to enjoy freedom leads to God, especially the perfect and eternal freedom is possible only within the embracing arms of Jesus. This novel is thus a text which dramatizes the pilgrimage to spiritual freedom.
