This study presents an experimental analysis and validation of a 600-liter liquid hydrogen (LH₂) mobility tank specifically designed for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). The performance metrics of the tank, such as safety and durability, were rigorously evaluated under real-world conditions. To reduce radiation heat leakage, multi-layer insulation was provided to the inner tank, while G-10 was used to minimize conduction heat transfer. The tank weight measurement and mass flow meter were used to measure the boil-off rate (BOR). The vacuum level in the LH₂ mobility tank was maintained at 1 mTorr to avoid residual gas conduction. Through a series of comprehensive tests, including BOR and dormancy, the reliability of the tank was confirmed, demonstrating its suitability for LH₂ HDV applications. Performance tests for LH₂ were conducted, resulting in a BOR of 2.81%/day and a dormancy period of 42 hours at 6 barg pressure. A model based on mass and energy balance was also developed, and theoretical calculations were carried out to examine dormancy and fluid temperature in the tank. The model results match well with the experimental results. These findings highlight the viability and practicality of using LH₂ as a viable alternative fuel for HDVs, helping to promote sustainable transportation solutions.
