Narva has been an important border area where Russia, Estonia, the European Union, and NATO meet, and a unique hybrid space of heterogeneous cultural elements since it became a border town between Russia and Estonia after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. This article agrees with the latest research that hybrid characteristics form one of the key parts of the multilayered identity structure of Narva, and looks at how this hybridity is specifically manifested in the spatial changes of Narva around the time of war in Ukraine in 2022, focusing on several representative cases. To this end, we first consider the spatial elements of Russianness that overwhelmingly dominate the cultural and social landscape of Narva and some significant changes they are currently undergoing. Then, we will analyze what cultural and political implications are contained in the spatial elements that emphasize and show the European nature deeply embedded in the long history of Narva, focusing on the spaces of European nature that are being newly reconstructed in Narva.
