This study explores the distinction between the synonymous terms maritime and marine in maritime news discourse using a corpus-based methodology. Using tools such as WordSmith Tools 9.0, Sketch Engine and Word2Vec, the research examines semantic preferences and semantic prosody to identify usage patterns. The results show that maritime is predominantly associated with institutional and industrial sectors, including governance, global trade and safety regulations. In contrast, marine is more often associated with ecological and environmental concerns, such as biodiversity and conservation efforts. In terms of semantic prosody, maritime generally conveys a neutral tone, occasionally carrying positive implications related to cooperation and progress. On the other hand, marine also maintains a neutral tone, but sometimes conveys negative overtones associated with environmental issues. The study provides insights into synonym differentiation in ESP and corpus linguistics, supporting maritime English education and enhancing industry-specific communication.
